The 2014-built container ship, Seaspan Yangtze, is the first of five dual-fuel retrofits for Hapag-Lloyd and PrimeServ’s 30th alternative fuel project. The refit was carried out at Cosco Shipping Heavy Industry (Shanghai).
The 10,100-TEU vessel, redeployed at the start of this month, is already demonstrating substantial energy efficiency gains, with its energy efficiency existing ship index (EEXI) showing a level 55% below the IMO’s international Phase 0 minimum requirement for new ships.
Christoph Thiem, Hapag-Lloyd’s director, Fleet Innovation, said: “The Seaspan Yangtze retrofit shows that upgrading existing vessels to methanol dual-fuel operation is no longer a concept, but a proven and repeatable engineering solution.”
He added that combining OEM engine expertise, careful project preparation, and close coordination with Seaspan, PrimeServ, and the shipyard, enabled a technically complex conversion to be completed on time, preparing the vessel for lower-carbon operation in the future.
PrimeServ has now completed 30 dual-fuel engine upgrades involving alternative fuels including LNG, methanol, and LPG. Such projects reduce carbon emissions substantially and can generate major savings on fuel penalties prevailing in Europe.
