Sovcomflot (SCF) has taken delivery of the 174,000m3 SCF Barents, the second in a series of three Atlanticmax-class LNG carriers ordered in 2018. The vessel is on long-term charter to a Shell subsidiary. The latest delivery brings SCF’s operating LNG fleet to 15 ships, with another 16 under construction.

Named after Dutch navigator and explorer, the SCF Barents has a Mark III Flex cargo containment system and is powered by a slow-speed WinGD X-DF main engine. Fuel consumption is substantially lower than the last generation of vessels, SCF said. The SCF Barents incorporates sustainability technologies including a NOx reduction system while the vessel burns liquid fuel, and a boil-off gas partial reliquefaction set-up to reduce cargo losses on long voyages or prior to cargo operations.

Igor Tonkovidov, SCF Group president and CEO, said: “For many years, Shell remains amongst the largest charterers of SCF’s vessels. Together with Shell, we share the success of our pioneering ‘Green Funnel’ initiative, launched exactly five years ago, to introduce cleaner-burning LNG fuel for large-capacity tankers. The delivery of SCF Barents serves as a logical next step in our mutually beneficial cooperation.”
