Greenland’s Royal Arctic Line AS has taken delivery of the first of two reefer vessels, built to a Havyard Design & Solutions specification at Astilleros Zamakona shipyard in Spain. The 67m-long vessel, Siuana Arctica, is of a Havyard 974 design and has capacity for 55 twenty-foot containers and 500 pallets.

The Siuana Arctica was due to leave the Spanish shipyard in December, bound for Aalborg in Denmark, where it will be prepared for the voyage to Greenland early in 2021.

The reefer vessel, with a service speed of 12 knots, is due to be deployed in the country’s Uummannaq region in the north-west from May 2021. Gisle Vinjevoll Thrane, Havyard Design’s vice president Sales, commented: “We’ve had good cooperation with the shipping company during the development of the freight vessel, which is designed for optional operation in sea ice and under tough weather conditions off Greenland. We are very pleased that the first of the two ships has now been delivered.” Royal Arctic Line transports all sea freight to and from Greenland’s 13 largest ports, securing supplies across the country.
