Ropax hull built under cover in Amsterdam

The hull of the ferry was recently launched

The hull of a Damen RoPax 5212 passenger ferry built under cover in less than three months has been launched at Netherlands-based steel construction and machining specialist Niron Staal Amsterdam.

In what is hoped will become a lasting partnership between the steel company and Damen Shipyards Group, the hull is the first new construction project and has now been towed to Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld for outfitting.
Roland Berends, director of Niron Staal Amsterdam, commented that the project was noteworthy for several reasons. It was significant, he said, because it was the first newbuild contract with Damen. Also, there had been close cooperation throughout the construction process.
“The basic and detailed engineering phases have really demonstrated the expertise and experience that has been shared between Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld and Niron Staal Amsterdam,” he said. “By building inside, we can guarantee the highest levels of quality. Without the influence of the weather, we can complete contracts within the time specified. Furthermore, the whole process is safer because we have the right tools and the right conditions”, Berends added.
The successful completion of the first construction contract paves the way for more projects, according to Berends. “We are pleased to say that we will be commencing multiple contracts in the spring,” he said.
