Rina signs MoU with Chinese R&D organisation

The classification society Rina has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China State Shipbuilding Corporation’s subsidiary, Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI), to develop an interface with the research company’s 3D ship model.

The aim of the project is to improve understanding of design, the transparency of designs, and protection of intellectual property, so that software calculation processes can be optimised, and drawings approved more quickly.

“The MoU takes a long history of cooperation between our companies to a new level,” declared Giosuè Vezzuto, Rina’s executive vice president, Marine. “This highly innovative approach to design verification offers many benefits, not least of which is a more efficient and robust exchange of information. The cooperation between Rina and SDARI is an exciting one that will mutually benefit both organisations and is in line with Rina’s ongoing digital strategy.”

Lyu Zhi-Yong, SDARI president, commented: “We are pleased to be working with Rina. They appreciate the potential of the work we have already done on our 3D model. Together we can develop our commercial relationship and combine our expertise and capabilities. It is a great opportunity for both organisations.”

Vezzuto noted that digitalisation is changing all aspects of shipbuilding and shipping, and a faster and more efficient sharing platform will benefit all parties. “We are very satisfied with the agreement just signed and always glad to support SDARI with further cooperation,” he said.
