RINA and ABB sign MoU focusing on emissions reduction

Classification society, RINA, and technology company, ABB, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on commercially viable strategies to advance decarbonisation. The partners cited fuel cell systems with carbon capture as one example, while hydrogen as fuel and other propulsion developments will also be considered.

As technology provider, ABB will focus on developing new ways of increasing fuel efficiency in existing systems, presenting and discussing options with owners, designers, and shipyards. Meanwhile, RINA will focus on providing Approvals in Principle for design concepts, and subsequently project and type approvals.

Other areas to be considered by the classification society include Hazard Identification and Operability (Hazil/Hazop) analyses, reviews of feasibility studies, cyber security certification, support with enterprise resource planning, and digital developments.

RINA’s executive vice president, Marine, Giosuè Vuzzuto, commented: “We are delighted about the MoU with ABB. It demonstrates the high level of commitment between our companies. There are many challenges to overcome, and collaboration is crucial if we are to succeed in addressing them to protect the environment.”

Representing ABB Marine & Ports, Rune Braastad, business line manager, Marine Systems, said: “We are happy to strengthen our collaboration with RINA to drive decarbonisation in shipping. ABB is known for its long-standing commitment and expertise in developing electric, automated and digital technologies to make the maritime industry more sustainable.

“Bringing new commercially viable solutions to the market is a long process that requires close collaboration between class societies and technology providers. I look forward to seeing the benefits these new solutions deliver to the industry and the environment,” he added.
