The research vessel for the Republic of Namibia

STX Finland Oy's Rauma Shipyard delivered a research vessel, built for the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources of the Republic of Namibia.

The “Mirabilis” is 62.4m long and 14.3m wide. Accommodation is provided for 44 crew members and research personnel. Furthermore, facilities for meteorological research are on board. For a good manoeuvrability a dynamic positioning system is installed. The “Mirabilis” is said to be able to operate the whole year in all weather conditions. According to STX, special attention has been paid to the ship's technology, serviceability and low maintenance costs. The tasks of the newbuilding will include monitoring of fish stock, as well as sorting, processing, freezing and storage of fish. It will also be used to collect biological samples from seabed, for water quality research and analysis, and to provide assistance for control of fishing.
