Order for LNG-powered freighters

The Bore vessels will serve European ports for Finnish energy and paper group UPM (Source: Bore)

Finnish energy and paper group UPM said it has reached a long-term charter agreement with Finnish shipping company Bore and Dutch shipping firm Wijnne Barends to design and build seven freighters for sustainable sea transport which will be ordered in China.
They will be part of UPM’s programme to increase environmentally friendly sailings in European waters. The vessels will be delivered in 2021 and 2022. Both Bore and Wijnne Barends are affiliates of the Dutch Spliethoff shipping group. UPM did not name the yards.
Wijnne Barends will order four lift on-lift off freighters for pulp paper and forest product transport but did not name its yard. Bore said separately it has signed a newbuilding contract with China’s Wuhu Shipyard for three liquified natural gas (LNG)-powered RoRo/lift on-lift off freighters of 7,000dwt for charter to UPM.
The Bore vessels will be 120m long, 21m wide and have a speed of about 15 knots. They will have Swedish/Finnish 1A ice-class, and will meet the latest technological, operational and environmental standards. The LNG results in a reduction of about 25% of CO₂ emissions compared with commonly used marine gas oil. In addition, NOx and SOx emissions will decrease by about 85% and 99%, respectively. At the same time the emission of particulate matter (soot) will decrease by 99%.
