Norwegian based shipbuilder ULSTEIN signed a contract to deliver a high capacity subsea construction vessel to GC Rieber Shipping, with an option for a second unit.

The type SX121 newbuilding will be 130m long and 25m wide with a maximum speed of 14.5 knots. According to ULSTEIN, the offshore construction vessel (OCV) will be equipped with a dynamic positioning system (DP3) and diesel electric propulsion with three main azimuth thrusters. An active heave compensated offshore crane with a capacity of 250 tonnes at 14m outreach will be on deck. Two ROVs; one is to be launched from the starboard side and the other one through a moonpool, are said to be also part of the equipment. The newbuilding will be prepared for a VLS tower (vertical lay system), a 2,500 tonnes rotating carousel below deck can be used for pipe laying operations. At most there is space for 130 persons. According to ULSTEIN the OCV will be delivered in the first quarter of 2014.
