New fuel-saving software from ABB generates fuel savings on freight ferry

Stena Line freight ferry, Stena Scotia, which operates a daily service between Rotterdam and Killingholme, UK, has been equipped with a vessel control software package, DEGO IV, from ABB, and fuel savings are already being measured within just one month of commissioning.

The latest generation of DEGO software has been enhanced so that the twin-screw ferry’s propulsion control system minimises roll and rudder movement, using predictive data processing technology to save fuel and improve crew comfort.
The DEGO IV software takes measurements from sensors monitoring 60 shipboard parameters in real time. These include engine variables such as rpm, scavenge air pressure and fuel consumption, as well as propeller parameters including pitch, slip, torque and power. Rudder and vessel centre-of-gravity data are also monitored. The software uses this real-time data to minimise ship roll and fine-tune propulsion control systems. By simulating the next two wave periods, roll damping against fuel consumption is optimised on a predictive basis.
