Miami-based Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has taken delivery of the 294m-long Norwegian Prima at Fincantieri’s Marghera shipyard in Venice.

The first of six ships in the Prima class, the 142,500-gt Norwegian Prima has a capacity of 3,215 passengers and is powered by diesel-electric machinery and two ABB Azipods.

The vessel is to be christened in Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, and will then embark on an eight-day maiden cruise to Amsterdam on August 27th.

Speaking at the delivery ceremony, Norwegian Cruise Line president and CEO, Harry Sommer, said: “Today, we usher in a thrilling new era in cruising as we celebrate the delivery of Norwegian Prima, the long-anticipated first ship in our extraordinary new Prima class. She is a true testament to our Guest First philosophy as well as our commitment to deliver unforgettable experiences that exceed expectations. We thank our wonderful partners at Fincantieri, whose coveted craftsmanship, expertise, and dedication, helped bring Norwegian Prima to life.”

Five more vessels in the Prima class will join NCL’s fleet between now and 2027. The second vessel, the Norwegian Viva, was floated out at the Marghera shipyard a few days after the delivery. It will be delivered next summer.
