Meyer Werft cuts first steel for Spirit of Discovery

Together, the Saga Group chief executive, Lance Batchelor, and Meyer Werft’s managing director Tim Meyer, set the computer-activated cutting machine in motion to cut the first steel. The 58,250gt vessel, with capacity for 999 passengers, will be the first of two sister ships to be built for the British cruise line, with deliveries scheduled for the summers of 2019 and 2020 respectively.
The 236m-long Spirit of Discovery is being built in the shipyard’s Building Dock 1 which has not been used recently for new construction. However, the ‘reactivation’ of this dock means that Meyer Werft will now be able to deliver three ships to various customers during 2019 and 2020, instead of the two vessels that were originally intended.
The two cruise vessels have been designed for the UK market.
