Methanol dual-fuel system awarded AiP

A methanol dual-fuel system, developed by Sasaki Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. for a 9,000dwt general cargo ship, has been granted Approval in Principle (AiP) by Bureau Veritas. The classification society assessed the Sasaki system against its Rule Note, NR 670 – Methanol & Ethanol Fuelled Ships.

NR 670 sets out requirements for the arrangement, installation, control, and monitoring of machinery, equipment, and systems using methyl/ethyl alcohol as fuel to minimise risks to ship, crew, and the environment.

The integration of the dual-fuel system into a relatively small 9,000dwt ship is an important step forward. The development of these dual-fuel systems has largely focused on large vessel applications. But Sasaki Shipbuilding specialises in the construction of small and medium-sized ships, and this AiP demonstrates the significant potential for decarbonising the many thousands of smaller vessels in the world fleet.

Alex Gregg-Smith, the classification society’s senior vice president & chief executive, North Asia and China, commented: “Bureau Veritas is committed to supporting the development and adoption of new fuels, such as methanol, as part of our broader mission to drive environmental stewardship and innovation within the industry. The adoption of methanol dual-fuel systems on vessels of this size underscores the versatility and practicality of methanol as a marine fuel. We commend Sasaki for their dedication to sustainability and look forward to furthering our partnership in developing innovative solutions for the maritime industry.”
