MAN to lead medium-speed ammonia engine project

MAN Energy Solutions is heading a research project on medium-speed ammonia engines with partners from industry and research institutes. The team members are aiming to develop a four-stroke, medium-speed, dual-fuel test engine that uses ammonia as fuel.

The engine company believes that these engines will be suitable for new cargo vessels, specialised ships, as well as gensets for large ammonia-powered two-stroke vessels. For ferries and cruise vessels, MAN is focusing on methanol as a fuel and is developing methanol-based engine technology accordingly.

The three-and-a-half-year project, AmmoniaMot 2, follows the original AmmoniaMot project which examined the fundamental issues surrounding ammonia combustion in internal combustion engines and finished last May. The positive results from that project now form the basis for the new research and development initiative.

Participants in the first project have been joined by other specialists in engineering disciplines. Academic experts are also on the team.

MAN’s head of Engineering R&D Four-Stroke, Alexander Knafl, commented: “For MAN Energy Solutions, this project is the next logical step after the previous AmmoniaMot project. It perfectly supports our own strategy to develop sustainable technologies and we very much appreciate the opportunity to work with our distinguished partners. For us, the path to decarbonising the maritime industry starts with decarbonising fuels and, in this context, ammonia is an excellent candidate as it is carbon-free and thus avoids CO2 emissions when used as a fuel in our engines.”

Led by MAN, partners in the project include WTZ Roßlau, Woodward L’Orange, Neptun Ship Design, GenSys, MNR, and the universities of Munich and Rostock.
