Tests on the first of six MAN dual-fuel engines due to be installed on 15,000-TEU container ships under construction at Hyundai Samho in South Korea have been completed successfully. The engine, tested by Hyundai’s Engine Machinery Division, ran successfully at full load in gas-only mode.

The 11G90ME-GI engines will be installed on the six newbuildings, ordered by Idan Ofer’s Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) and due for delivery from later this year to 2022. The engines will also incorporate MAN’s new Pilot Booster Injector Valves which have atomising holes of different sizes to optimise fuel supply in different fuel modes, potentially reducing pilot oil consumption to just 1.5%.

Captain Anil Singh, Eastern Pacific’s COO, commented: “EPS decided to use LNG as a marine fuel and chose to install the two-stroke ME-GI engine in these newbuilds. The success of the shop test reinforces our decision, and we look forward to the addition of this environmentally friendly tonnage to our diverse fleet.”
