MAN Diesel & Turbo and MM-Offshore, a German ship design and equipment supplier, are to work together to optimise propulsion and manoeuvring system combinations, areas in which each company specialises respectively.

The agreement, signed last week at NorShipping, is based on a holistic approach taking into account specifically the interaction between propeller and rudder systems, as well as a ship’s hull.
The two companies are likely to focus on systems based on MAN Diesel & Turbo’s proprietary Kappel propeller, optimised rudder bulb and hub-fairing cones, and MM-Offshore’s Empress twisted rudder designs. Energy-saving devices will also be considered, as well as the technical coordination of common shipbuilding projects to ensure maximum efficiency with benefits for designers, builders, owners and operators.
Jan Hamann, president of MM-Offshore, said: “The focus of this cooperation agreement will be on developing common propulsion and manoeuvring solutions for different ship types using each company’s unique experience and know-how."
