Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd (MOL) has ordered dual-fuel engines from Osaka-based Yanmar for Japan’s first two LNG-powered ferries. The vessels, provisionally named Sunflower Kurenai and Sunflower Murasaki, will be built at Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s Shimonoseki Shipyard.

Ferry Sunflower, an MOL subsidiary, will charter the ships and deploy them on the Osaka-Beppu route from the end of 2022 until mid-2023 as replacements for the ferries that are currently in service.

They will have Yanmar 8EY26LDF engines with features including load fluctuation tracking, acceleration performance, and air-fuel ratio control enabling optimum combustion at all times. The eight-cylinder engines, with a rated power of 1.73 MW, will operate with generators of capacity 1.6 MWe and will meet IMO Tier III requirements.
