Isles of Scilly fleet renewal projects move ahead
At 45m in length, Menawethan has been specifically designed to meet the logistical needs of the islands. She will transport freight, fuel and essential supplies that are vital to daily life across the archipelago.

The 45m-long freight vessel, Menawethan, was christened earlier this month and has now entered service for the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group (ISSG) on the route between Penzance in Cornwall and Scilly Isles’ capital, Hugh Town, on St Mary’s island.
Meanwhile, sea trials have begun on the GBP 40 million Scillionian IV In Vietnam where the French shipbuilder, Piriou,operates a shipyard where both vessels have been built.
The latest ferry connecting the UK mainland with the islands is larger than its predecessor with capacity for 600 passengers. The 75m-long vessel has anti-roll stabilisers and Hull Vane technology to reduce ship motions and improve fuel efficiency in the frequently stormy seas off the UK’s south west coast. The ship will have a speed of 18 knots.

Following her long delivery voyage from Vietnam to Cornwall, the vessel has fully demonstrated her excellent seakeeping qualities and her ability to fulfil the essential mission that awaits her in serving the Isles of Scilly. We know how eagerly she has been awaited by the island communities, and we are delighted to have contributed to such a vital project for their future ... We are now fully focused on the next milestone: the completion of sea trials and the delivery of Scillonian IV this winter.”
