The Krishna, the first of three Indian Navy training ships, has been launched at Larsen & Toubro’s shipyard in Kattupalli, Chenai. The vessel, classed by the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) and named after the country’s third longest river, will enable 150 men and 60 women to undergo training for work in the Indian Navy.

In addition to its main training function, the adaptable vessel has been designed to undertake other functions including hospital ship deployments, non-combatant evacuation operations, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and search and rescue missions.

Commander KK Dhawan (Retd), IRS head of Defence, commented: “The launch of Krishna marks an important milestone in strengthening India’s indigenous naval design and construction capabilities. IR Class is proud to contribute to this prestigious project by ensuring compliance with robust classification standards, aligned with global benchmarks.”

The Krishna is due to be delivered by September this year.
