The 3,000dwt vessel, a platform supply vessel (PSV) named after a Russian explorer of the country’s eastern region, has been built to the shipyard’s design, with hull assembly, outfitting, testing and commissioning also undertaken by the Helsinki facility, now owned by Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation.
The remaining three vessels, built under the same arrangements, are smaller 2,000dwt standby vessels with more functionality and additional accommodation. All four vessels are classed by the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping and will fly the Russian flag. Construction supervision is being carried out by the Russian classification society and the four vessels represent a total of 3,500 man-years of work at the shipyard.
They will be assigned Russian ice-class ‘Icebreaker 6’ notation and will be deployed in the year-round delivery of supplies and consumables, and standby duties at offshore platforms. The ships have been designed to undertake other duties including environmental protection and rescue operations.
Esto Mustamäki, Arctech Helsinki Shipyard CEO, declared the Gennadiy Nevelskoy a “forerunner in Arctic shipbuilding”. He noted that the environmentally advanced vessel meets IMO’s Tier III requirements and has been designed to minimise underwater noise.
