Spanish shipbuilder Gondan has won a contract from Østensjø Rederi to build what will be the Norwegian company’s most powerful tug yet. The 50m-long vessel, with a bollard pull of 150 tonnes, is designed for the most challenging of operations offshore, combining powerful thrust with good manoeuvrability, and a DP2 system for precise positioning.

The tug will be based on a Skipsteknisk ST-933 design capable of undertaking towing manoeuvres from both the bow and stern using a single powerful high-performance combined winch. The tug will be powered by a hybrid diesel-electric system and will be delivered ready to operate on methanol in the future.

Crew welfare has been high on the Norwegian workboat operator’s agenda. The high-quality crew accommodation for 14 persons has been designed to minimise noise and vibration. This aim has been aided by the use of permanent magnet RIM Drive manoeuvring propellers which operate quietly and provide a comfortable working environment, even in heavy seas.

The two companies have a long relationship – Gondan has built 21 vessels for the Norwegian owner over a little more than 20 years.

Østensjø is due to take delivery of the tug in 2028.
