Electric ferry to join fleet of Västtrafik

Sister vessel Elvy is succesfully in operation since 2019 (Source: EST-Floattech)

Another electric ferry is set to join the fleet of Västtrafik, the organisation responsible for public transportation in the port city of Gothenburg. Finnish yard Uki Workboat (Uudenkaupungin Työvene Oy) is going to build the port ferry which is scheduled to be delivered in 2022.

The new ferry will be fitted with 1,260 kWh of battery energy in a total of 120 battery modules supplied by EST-Floattech, based in the Netherlands. This battery installation will enable full electric propulsion of the ferry up to seven or eight hours every day, depending on the weather conditions. When the battery pack has run out of power, it can be recharged during operation, or with electricity onshore. The battery installation has made it possible to use only one diesel generator on the ferry and to fit a smaller fuel tank.

This solution is expected to cut CO2 emission by more then 55% while nitrogen oxides and particles emissions are reduced by 40% compared to sister vessels.
