Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) and Newfoundland-based intermodal transport company, Oceanex Inc, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on the development of a climate-neutral container RoRo ship design.

The MoU was signed by FSG managing director, Philipp Maracke, and Sid Hynes, executive chairman of Oceanex, during a high-ranking trip to Canada by a German delegation. The partners have agreed to investigate alternative fuels and the technologies used to develop them in the context of the Oceanex operational area.

In a statement, Maracke stressed the shipbuilder’s goals as a pioneer in the energy transition, noting its leadership in low-emission ship designs in the past. “Building on our references and expertise, we want to be a driver when it comes to energy transition in shipping,” he said.

Speaking for Oceanex, Hynes commented: “Building our fleet of vessels to ensure we’re leveraging the latest technologies and the most environmentally friendly fuel sources is critical for Oceanex. Partnering with FSG will allow us to do just that.”
