Two 16-cylinder MTU gas engines from Rolls-Royce installed on the newly commissioned Wadden Sea ferry, Willem Barentz, are demonstrating high performance targets and low emissions at the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Dutch shipping company, Doeksen, introduced the first of two 70m-long ferries, which have capacity for 600 passengers and 64 cars, on July 1st. The Harlingen-based company, which operates ferry services to the West Frisian islands of Terschelling and Vlieland, plans to commission the second vessel, Willem de Vlamingh, in September, taking its total fleet to eight vessels.

The engines on board the two new ferries follow installation of a pair of 746-kW units on the new Lake Konstanz ferry which is due to enter service during the winter months.

Paul Melles, managing director of Doeksen, commented: “I’m really impressed with the MTU gas engines. So far, they’ve met all our expectations in terms of performance, transient response behaviour, smooth travel and low noise. The very first single-fuel gas engine that can drive a fixed propeller directly and is therefore capable of direct acceleration was the advantage that really made the difference for us.”

Speaking for Rolls-Royce Power systems, Knut Müller, head of Marine and Governmental Business, said: “We’re very proud that the Doeksen shipping company has chosen our new gas engines for eco-friendly operation of their ferries on the Wadden Sea, which is recognised as worthy of special environmental protection. Joining forces with them as our partner, we will be focusing our efforts on driving the energy turnaround.”
