Grimaldi subsidiary, Finnlines, has ordered two 5,100 lane-metre RoPax vessels at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Weihai), previously known as AVIC Weihai. The ‘Superstar’ vessels, due for delivery in 2023, will be larger than the company’s existing Star class and, Finnlines said, will be the company’s flagships in both size and technology.

In addition to the freight capacity, the 230m-long ships will have capacity for about 1,100 passengers. They will also have the highest Finnish/Swedish ice class notation.

Emanuele Grimaldi, Finnlines CEO, commented: “This investment aims at energy efficiency and emission reduction but, at the same time, it is an investment for the highest passenger comfort. We want to lead the development of high-quality RoRo and RoPax services in the Baltic Sea region. Our ongoing EUR 500 million newbuilding programme will ensure that we continue to provide premium services to our customers.”
