Exmar names first ammonia mid-sized gas carriers

Antwerp-based Exmar has named what it calls the world’s first two ammonia dual-fuel mid-sized gas carriers. The 46,000-m3 Antwerpen and Arlon have been developed jointly with HD Hyundai in a project that has taken more than 40 months. The resulting dual-fuel technology is expected to slash carbon dioxide by up to 90% at sea.
The shipping company claims that by extending the vessels’ length by ten metres and adding a small margin to their beam, the vessels will carry significantly more cargo. They have cargo tanks with a capacity of 45,000m3 and two 500-m3 deck tanks.
The finalisation of the project has been achieved with a number of key partners. They include HD Hyundai, HHI-EMD, Lloyd’s Register, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, and WinGD.
Throughout the process, the safety of ships and crews has remained a top priority, Exmar said in a statement. Numerous workshops, risk assessments and technical reviews have been supported by the company’s seagoing personnel who have long experience of shipping ammonia by sea.
Exmar is considered to be one of the foremost carriers of ammonia and LPG by sea, with more than four decades of experience.
