EPA Tier III certification for Wärtsilä dual-fuel engine

A six-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel engine
The 34DF engine had already been approved as compliant with EPA Tier III when operating on gas without a SCR. Now the engine can be fully compliant in both fuel modes. This means that a shipyard now needs only one party to certify both the engine and the SCR system.
“This is a very meaningful achievement since it allows operators complete fuel flexibility when sailing in NOx emission control areas,” commented Stefan Wiik, vice president Marine Power Solutions, Wärtsilä Marine Solution. “It represents further validation of Wärtsilä’s technological leadership in working towards greater environmental sustainability and a cleaner shipping industry.”
For marine applications, the Wärtsilä 34DF engine is available with six to 16 cylinders across a power range from 2,880 kW to 8 MW and is now fully compliant with both US EPA and IMO Tier III NOx requirements. The EPA regulations entered force in 2016 for engines with a cylinder displacement of more than 30 litres per cylinder to be installed on US-flagged or registered vessels. The IMO’s rules entered force in the North American and Caribbean Emissions Control Areas from January 2016 for vessels with engines producing 130 kW of power or more.
