Energy-efficient drives for seven newbuildings

A similar drilling vessels for the same end-user (Seadrill), equipped with ABB system as well

The power and automation technology group, ABB, recently announced an USD 80 million order from Samsung Heavy Industries to supply energy-efficient drives, motors and electrical power systems for five drilling vessels and two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers.

All units will be built at Samsung’s shipyard in South Korea. The vessels will be used to extract, process and transport oil and gas. ABB’s delivery is said to help the ships to enhance the energy efficiency, as well as to provide a reliable power supply to improve the use of onboard equipment. The order contains the complete electrical systems for all seven vessels, including power generation and distribution equipment and systems, variable frequency drives and motors to power main propulsion systems and thrusters, as well as drives to power the topside drilling equipment.
