Ecochlor awarded type approval for BWMS range

Massachusetts-based ballast water management system (BWMS) manufacturer, Ecochlor, has been awarded type approval for its entire range of units, with flow rates from 500m3/hour to 16,200m3/hour. The Norwegian Maritime Authority has approved the systems under the IMO’s revised 2016 G8 standards.

This is an important step for Ecochlor because, from October 28th, 2020, earlier treatment systems which were designed to comply with the original G8 guidelines will no longer meet requirements and will have to be modified or redesigned to maintain full compliance. However, this type approval means that shipowners and operators can continue to install Ecochlor systems after October 28th, safe in the knowledge that they are fully and universally compliant.

Ecochlor said that the additional tests were carried out in marine, brackish and fresh water earlier this year. No changes were required either to equipment or to the two-step treatment process, which is based on filtration and chlorine dioxide. Ecochlor’s CEO, Steve Candito, commented: “This latest regulatory approval is another example of Ecochlor’s unwavering commitment to obtain and maintain regulatory approvals from class societies and flag administrations across the globe, even as the requirements continue to evolve.”
