China Merchants-owned Deltamarin has signed a design contract with Jiangsu Zhenjiang Shipyard Group for an open deck carrier for Finnish shipping company, Meriaura. Design work is starting immediately based on a concept developed in Finland jointly by Deltamarin and the shipowner.
Meriaura carries a variety of cargoes in northern Europe, including bulk, raw, recycled and project consignments. Its 120m-long new vessel will have 1A ice class, DP2 notation, and a cargo capacity of 6,800dwt. The vessel is designed for heavy and special cargoes, with a specific focus on RoRo operations, and will work mostly in short-sea trades.
The ship’s shallow draft and large open deck will enable the carriage of challenging cargoes to regions with shallow waters, limited infrastructure and restricted space. A multi-fuel engine will be capable of running on Meriaura’s own biofuel and the vessel will be battery-ready with a plug-and-play setup.
Deltamarin CEO, Janne Uotila, commented: “We are pleased to continue our involvement in this project, which supports Meriaura’s fleet renewal programme and introduces a new shipyard client for Deltamarin. The vessel’s decarbonisation solutions are fully aligned with our strategic commitment to sustainability.”
