Delivery of first Class 209PN submarine for the Portuguese Navy

The first of two Class 209PN submarines for the Portuguese Navy, “N.R.P. Tridente”, was recently delivered by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft, a company of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, in Kiel.

The new approx. 68m long submarine with a displacement of approx. 1,840t incorporates a combined diesel-electric fuel cell propulsion system. The Class 209PN combines the proven design principles of the Class 209 family with the innovative features of Class 214, according to the shipyard. It is equipped with ultra-modern sensors and an integrated Command and Weapon Control System, making it optimally suited to its future reconnaissance and surveillance roles. The submarine is designed for a crew of 32.

The contract for the two submarines was signed with the Portuguese in 2004. The production of “N.R.P. Tridente” started on March 7th 2005. The naming ceremony took place in July 2008. The second submarine, named “N.R.P. Arpao” on June 18th 2009, is currently undergoing sea trials.
