Steel has now been cut for two large offshoe tugs at Albwardy Damen Shipyard in the UAE. Construction will combine the shipyard’s expertise with that of marine engineering specialist, Alewijnse, a Netherlands-based electrical, automation, and systems integration specialist.
The ultra-powerful tugs will be capable of pushing, pulling, and supporting offshore functions. They are being built in collaboration with Mexican maritime services company, Chomex Marino, and global energy company, Woodside. The two tugs, the largest that Alewijnse has worked on to date, will be deployed in deepwater operations in the Gulf of Mexico.
The 67m-long DP2 vessels will have a bollard pull of 120 tonnes both ahead and astern, and 250m2 of free deck space. They have been designed for good seakeeping in severe weather conditions and will carry out functions including the handling of mooring lines and cargo hoses, hose maintenance, tanker assistance during tandem offloading operations, ROV deployment, standby services, oil spill response, and other supply and replenishment operations.
