Bergen-based Corvus Energy has won a contract to supply energy storage systems (ESS) for two new hybrid ferries for Washington State Ferries (WSF), with an option for a third vessel. The company has been chosen by ABB Marine & Ports as the single source vendor for the new ferries, and ABB has selected the lightweight and high-power Corvus Dolphin NxtGen energy storage systems.
The new vessels will have capacity for 1,500 passengers and 160 vehicles and will be built at Eastern Shipbuilding Group in Florida for delivery in 2030 and 2031.
Bruce Strupp, vice president Marine Systems at the ABB company said: “Washington State Ferries forge a very progressive path towards environmentally sustainable operations with these electric hybrid ferries, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of zero-emission maritime transportation in the US.”
The two new ferries will be the first vessels in the company’s electrification strategy that could involve up to 16 new vessels and close to USD 4 billion in capital expenditure. The project is said to be the largest ferry electrification project in the US so far and is seen as a significant milestone in the country’s marine emissions reduction drive.
