Cooperation agreement Brödrene Aa AS and Kockums AB

Brödrene Aa has enjoyed dramatic growth in the passenger vessel sector, based on its catamaran design construction in carbon fibre. Over the past seven years, Brödrene Aa has built 23 passenger vessels and has a further six order bookings.

Kockums has been developing its expertise in composite over more than 45 years and is a market leader in naval applications of composite technology. The design and construction of the Visby-class of stealth corvettes for the Swedish Navy represents the most extensive experience of construction in carbon-reinforced fibre to date. The Visby-class corvette is the largest vessel in the world so far built in this material. Kockums has already also announced the receipt of an order for CarboCAT carbon fibre reinforced civil workboats, to be used to service offshore windparks.

Compared to aluminium, carbon-reinforced fibre offers a weight reduced of up to 40 percent. It is also non-corrosive, while sandwich construction offers significant savings on maintenance, combined with extreme reliability. The use of such a lightweight material also cuts fuel consumption, further reducing costs. And it means that smaller propulsion systems are able to offer similar performance to boats constructed in more traditional (heavier) materials, requiring much larger engine. This means less environmental impact.
