Coastal cruise vessels launched in Turkey

Two new coastal cruise vessels, under construction for Havila Voyages at Turkey’s Tersan Shipyard, have now been launched. The 179-cabin Havila Castor and Havila Capella will be deployed on Norway’s coastal route between Bergen and Kirkenes.

Powered by LNG and large battery packs, the ships will emit less CO2 than other vessels on the route. They will also be capable of operating almost silently and free of emissions for up to four hours, Havila Voyages said.

The pandemic has caused some delays at the shipyard and the two vessels are running late. They will not be ready to enter service by the beginning of 2021, as planned. However, delivery is still likely during the first quarter.

Meanwhile, the company has received approval for two substitute vessels should they be needed. But demand for sailings on the coastal route remains as yet uncertain.

Although the vessels were launched later than intended, some of the outfitting that would normally take place when the ships are in the water has already been completed. Such work includes plumbing, machinery, electricity, and fixtures and fittings.

Commenting on the ships’ delivery early next year, Havila Voyages CEO, Arild Myrvoll said: “It will be good to start providing people living along the coast, and tourists, with safe transport and environmentally friendly sailing on the world’s most beautiful coastal voyage.”
