Bureau Veritas (BV) is to class two hybrid double-ended ferries designed by Netherlands-based CoCo Yachts for operation by Sun Ferry Services Company Limited in Hong Kong. The two vessels will carry about four million passengers a year between Central Pier and Cheung Chau Pier in Hong Kong domestic waters.

The double-hulled Urban Sprinter 1000 vessels, with aluminium hulls and superstructures, will be built by YaGuang Technology Co. Ltd. in Zhuhai, China. They will be equipped with batteries and solar power technology.

The first vessel will have a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion setup and will operate with zero emissions when sailing between pier boundaries and during berthing. The second vessel will have diesel-electric propulsion. Both ferries will have a battery pack for overnight energy to avoid using diesel generators.

Each vessel will have four IMO Tier III diesel generators, with three typically in operation and one on standby. With a service speed of 16 knots, the ferries will also have permanent magnet electric motors and four Azimuth L-type thrusters.

The open third decks, earmarked for sightseeing, will be partly covered by solar panels, helping to reduce emissions. The vessels will have functional and luxurious accommodation on the main and upper decks, and minimal noise and vibration levels.

BV Marine & Offshore’s Alex Gregg-Smith, senior vice president and chief executive, North Asia and China, commented: "BV is very proud to play a significant role in this partnership with CoCo Yachts, Guang Technology and Sun Ferry, to deliver these innovative ferries for Hong Kong domestic waters. BV is honoured to support the project from its inception, providing full plan approval and design support, and we are happy to help advance innovation that is much needed to achieve a carbon neutral and sustainable future for the benefit of all marine stakeholders, the environment and society as a whole."

The ferries’ design and construction will be surveyed and certified by BV, and the classification society will also oversee all flag-related items, including safety and stability, delegated from the Hong Kong Marine Department. The first Urban Sprinter 1000 is due for delivery in the second quarter of 2024; the second in the first quarter of 2025.
