BV approves new fuel systems
Classification society Bureau Veritas (BV) has awarded Approvals in Principle (AiP) to four new fuel vessel concepts developed by Chinese engineering and design firms. A 100,000m3 ethane carrier design, developed by the Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute and the largest of its kind so far, has been approved by the classification society. It is the first such vessel to have aluminium alloy Type B independent cargo tanks, capable of storing cargoes at -104°C.
Dalian Shipbuilding has been awarded an AiP for a 30,000m3 liquefied ammonia bunker vessel while an 82,000dwt ammonia-fuelled bulk carrier design, developed by the Marine Design and Research Institute of China has also been approved.
A fourth AiP has been issued by the classification society for a 64,500dwt bulk carrier design developed by Nantong Xiangyu. The vessel will be able to use LNG, methanol or ammonia as fuel.Meanwhile, Eve Power Co has received type approval from BV for its lithium-ion battery cell system. The energy storage design consists of expandable battery clusters, each containing a series of battery packs and comes with thermal runaway detection, leakage detection and a liquid cooling system.
