Bureau Veritas issues new ‘Biofuel Ready’ notation

Classification society, Bureau Veritas (BV), has launched a new ‘Biofuel Ready’ notation which is intended to support shipowners and operators address the challenges of biofuel use to ensure ship safety and environmental compliance. The notation can be applied to both new and existing ships.

Developed together with shipowners and engine manufacturers, the notation will certify that appropriate fuel testing and documentary procedures are in place and that the conditions to use biofuel on a ship have been successfully met. It will also warrant that NOx testing, if applicable, has been completed satisfactorily, the classification society said.

Laurent Leblanc, BV’s senior vice president Technical & Operations, commented: “As one of the few fuel options available today to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from existing fleets, the use of biofuels by the shipping industry is growing rapidly. I am proud that we can now help shipowners deploy these innovative fuels on their vessels, while ensuring that all safety and regulatory requirements are met.
