AYK clinches battery deal for nine RoPax ships

Andorra-based AYK Energy is to provide batteries for nine RoPax vessels ordered by the Grimaldi Group at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Weihai).
The Naples-based shipowner will have OrionAN batteries, each of capacity 2.073MW, integrated with multi-fuel engines and other sustainable features including high-efficiency propellers, waste heat recovery systems, and shore power connectivity.
Grimaldi will operate six of the vessels in the Mediterranean in its Grimaldi Lines and Minoan Lines services, and three ships in the Baltic under the Finnlines brand, a wholly-owned subsidiary. The RoPax units are due for delivery between 2028 and 2030.
Chris Kruger, founder of AYK Energy, noted that battery technology is advancing fast as it becomes more affordable, battery sizes increase, and they become a key component in more sustainable operations.
