Tasmanian Shipping and Logistics Company, SeaRoad Pty Ltd, partner companies, and friends attended the launching and naming ceremony of the freight ferry, Searoad I, at Flensburger Shipyard last week. The 11,970dwt vessel, with a length of 210m and powered by LNG, is designed to carry a range of freight types and will be the largest vessel ever operated by the Tasmanian shipping company.

The RoRo will have a freight capacity of 3,620 lane metres and 101 cars. It will be capable of carrying heavy loads of up to 100 tonnes, containers via a cassette system, road trailers, vehicles and high-and-heavy cargo units. Two main engines will give the vessel a service speed of 22.5 knots and twin bow and stern thruster will ensure good manoeuvrability.

The Searoad I is due for completion in Germany in July next year and will start operating on the Bass Strait in September.
