London-based Anemoi Marine Technologies and Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering (NACKS) have released details of a new wind-assisted propulsion system (WAPS) specifically for ultramax bulk carriers in the 60-65,000dwt range. Two configurations have been awarded type approval from Japanese classification society, ClassNK.

Both arrangements use Anemoi wind power technology with sails of 3.5m diameter and 24.5m height. One setup has a single rotor sail on the forecastle deck; the other has three sails on a longitudinal rail system on the upper deck.

Nico Contopoulos, Anemoi’s CCO, commented: “Ultramax vessels have been early adopters of WAPS technology, going back to Anemoi’s installation on the world’s first bulk carrier with rotor sails in 2018, the mv Afros, and the AiP represents an opportunity to apply all those lessons to optimise installations for maximum efficiency on our ‘generation three’ products.”

The UK company’s tie-up with NACKS is important because Chinese yards have increased their share of the bulk carrier orderbook from just 5% ten years ago to more than 25% today, according to DNV figures.
