Alfa Laval PureBallast 3 type-approved by USCG

Alfa Laval PureBallast ballast water treatment system has received US Coast Guard type approval
The Swedish company’s system is now one of three to have been awarded type approval by the USCG and follows confirmation of Optimarin’s type approval early in December. PureBallast 3 received type approval simultaneously with OceanSaver, the first system to be approved based on electro-chlorination.
PureBallast 3, which uses ultra-violet (UV) treatment and filtration, has a flexible set-up based on four different UV reactors, allowing optimal sizing across a range of flow requirements. So far, two of Alfa Laval’s reactors have been approved – the 300 and 1000m3/hour units – whilst the 170 and 600m3/hour reactors are likely to be approved soon. The delay is due to a requirement to review the mathematically modelled reactor scaling process.
More than 1,200 PureBallast systems have now been sold, both for retrofits and newbuildings. Alfa Laval claims that PureBallast 3 offers good performance in fresh, brackish and marine waters and works well in low-clarity water in which it can operate at full flow where transmittance is as low as 42%.
