ABB is to provide integrated electric power and propulsion systems for two superyachts on order at Netherlands-based yacht builder Oceanco. The two vessels are due for delivery in 2031 and 2032.

The ABB system will combine Azipod® electric propulsion with Onboard DC Grid™, PEMS™ power and energy management systems and batteries. The setup will optimise energy flows between all of the yachts’ consumers for maximum energy efficiency, the company said.

The Onboard Grid will distribute power efficiently and prepare the yachts for alternative fuels and hybrid power arrangements. Peak-shaving will enable power to be stored for optimal energy efficiency.

The vessels will have dual 4.2-MW Azipod systems with Ice Class 1C. An electric motor located inside the pod will eliminate mechanical transmission losses and improve fuel efficiency.

Oceanco CEO, Marcel Onkenhout, commented: “At Oceanco, we are committed to providing yacht owners with ultimate efficiency, comfort, and sustainability. We recognise that the power plant principle based on DC integration and electric propulsion, as well-established technologies, is critical to this objective. ABB’s integrated power and propulsion solutions are proven to deliver exceptional performance across the board.”
