Spain’s state-owned shipbuilding and design company, Navantia, has signed a deal with ABB for the supply of complete DC-based power distribution and propulsion systems for two hydrographic vessels.
Scheduled for delivery by 2028, the ships will operate as part of the Spanish Navy on projects including mapping the country’s coastal waters, contributing to national defence, monitoring the marine environment, and ensuring maritime safety.
For each vessel, ABB is to supply an Onboard DC GridTM with PEMSTM power and energy management system, transformers, thruster motors, and batteries. The company will also be responsible for all system integration processes including engineering, testing, and commissioning.
The Onboard DC Grid, combined with the PEMS system, will optimise the vessel’s total power resources. These will include variable speed generators, energy storage systems, and possible integration of future energy sources.
“ABB has shown to be a dependable and capable technology partner over our two previous collaborations involving the Spanish Navy,” declared Alberto Cervantes, Navantia’s director of Corvettes and Maritime Action Ship Business. “The forthcoming coastal hydrographic vessels will operate in demanding environments, where the energy efficiency, reliability and flexibility of ABB’s Onboard DC Grid™ will prove invaluable.”
ABB has also worked for other navies including those of Germany, Netherlands and Belgium as well as the Canadian Coast Guard and the Finnish Border Guard.
