Viam and Rivertrace to use AI in tackling pollution risk
New York-based robotics and AI technology firm, Viam, and UK oil-in-water monitoring specialist, Rivertrace, have joined forces are to develop systems for the digital and environmental compliance monitoring of merchant vessels.
Until now, Rivertrace’s monitoring systems measure oil content in water discharge ensuring vessels meet strict environmental systems have been recorded manually. They include oil levels, flow rates, and GPS coordinates. The system, however, has not been fail-safe, with discrepancies in oil-in-water logs leading to ship detentions, delays, and expensive compliance violations.
Ship operators face strict discharge standards which set standards for oil content, typically 15 parts per million. However, there are moves towards stricter standards to protect main life and protect water quality.
Viam founder and CEO, Eliot Horowitz, said: “Rivertrace has been a true leader in maritime environmental compliance monitoring for over 40 years. The Viam platform brings new levels of accuracy and compliance assurance to Rivertrace’s systems, directly benefiting fleet operators, the industry, and the planet.”
Martin Saunders, managing director of Rivertrace, commented: “Working with Viam has given us a future- proof solution. The partnership highlights the benefits of the digital ecosystem within marine, automating previously manual transactions. Compliance is a key objective for our customers. We look forward to implementing the solution, providing tangible value for our customers.”
Viam is active in various areas of marine business including driving operational efficiency gains for boat builders and ship operators, as well as promoting and advance ocean conversation priorities.
