Standard model for GHG calculations of RoRo vessels

The Global Ro-Ro Community (GRC), a six-member organisation, has announced guidelines for calculating greenhouse gas emission intensity for RoRo vessels. The framework has been drawn up in conjunction with the Smart Freight Centre (SFC). GRC’s six members are Eastern Car Liner, Kawaskai Kisen Kaisha, Mitsui OSK, NYK, Wallenius Wilhelmsen and ClassNK.

The guidelines establish a common calculation method, enabling shippers to measure Scope 3 emissions accurately. The initiative is intended to promote and hasten maritime decarbonisation.

The six GRC members and the SFC have developed a standard model for calculating GHG emissions using parties in the RoRo supply chain including shipping companies and their customers, as well as third-party verifiers.

The model, which complies with ISO 14083 and the Global Logistics Emissions Council framework, was announced at this year’s annual Smart Freight Week in Amsterdam. The SFC now plans to collect actual data on environmental performance on a ship-by-ship basis and publish accurate emissions intensity data for the sector on a regular basis.
