Classification society Rina and Hamburg Port Consulting (HPC) have won a five-year deal – ‘Promoting Green Ports and Connectivity in the Caspian Sea Region’. The green ports project will assist ports in the Caspian and Black Sea – Baku in Azerbaijan, Aktau and Kuryk in Kazakhstan, Turkmenbashi in Turkmenistan, and Batumi in Georgia.
The aim of the project is to reduce transport’s environmental footprint by adopting renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, adopting digital innovation, improving connectivity, and advancing climate action. Gender equality and women’s empowerment in ports will also be a priority.
Rina and HPC will support in Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the project’s facilitator, with tailored analyses and action plans to advance low-carbon operations and environmental monitoring, alongside technical specifications for pilot investments and institutional strengthening measures.
On project completion, the ports will have access to climate and energy-transition strategies, technical blueprints for pilot projects, and enhanced institutional capacity to implement sustainable port management systems.
