Tokyo-based NYK Line, Norway’s Yara Clean Ammonia, and Singapore bunker firm Golden Island have drawn up a non-binding Term Sheet in preparation for a partnership to explore the marketing and supply of low-carbon ammonia as marine fuel in Singapore.
NYK Line will provide its expertise in LNG bunkering as well as its knowledge of operating ammonia carriers and ammonia-fuelled vessel projects. Yara Clean Ammonia, as one of the frontrunners in the ammonia field, will supply detailed knowledge of production and handling. And Golden Island will provide access to a strong client base developed over four decades, as well as its experience in bunkering operations and scheduling. The partners hope to begin operations by the end of the decade.
Atsuya Nojiri, NYK Bulkship (Asia) managing director, commented: “NYK group operates a fleet of more than 900 vessels and recognises the transition to zero-or-near-zero marine fuels as a critical step towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. With its potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, ammonia is expected to play an important role in the future marine fuel mix.”
Yara Clean Ammonia’s Murali Srinivasan, SVP Commercial, said: “This partnership marks an important milestone in realising our vision of a low-emission ammonia supply chain for new markets. Together with NYK Line and Golden Island, we are developing a last-mile ecosystem that will make low-emission ammonia bunkering available safely and reliably at one of the world’s most critical maritime hubs.”
Emphasising Golden Island’s sector leading strategies in adopting new marine fuels and digitalisation of the bunkering process, the company’s managing director, Johnny Tan, said: “We bring a strong customer network and deep operational expertise in bunker scheduling and supply chain coordination … we look forward to contributing our operational capabilities and high safety standards to support Singapore’s development as a global hub for next-generation marine fuels.”
