MLC certification submitted
Among other things, the certificates confirms that the working and living conditions of the crew on these cargo ships meet the requirements of the incoming Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC 2006).
The GL carried out inspections on board the three vessels to make sure that all required documents were present on board, to interview crew members, and to examine the accommodations areas, galley, store rooms and medical care facilities. Based on these inspections, GL issued a "Maritime Labour Statement of Compliance" in the name of the Flag State of the three vessels, the Marshall Islands. As soon as the MLC 2006 enters into force, the voluntary "Statement of Compliance" will be converted into the "Maritime Labour Certificate".
The certificate is valid for five years. The Convention is expected to enter into force in 2013. All international merchant ships of 500 gt or more will be obligated to carry a Maritime Labour Certificate and a Declaration of Maritime Labour Compliance on board, documenting its compliance with the national regulations of the vessel's flag state based on the MLC 2006.
