A 700-TEU container ship to be deployed in Japan’s domestic liner trades is the first newly constructed ship to be granted ‘AUTO-Nav2(All)” notation by ClassNK. It provides assurance that the ship has been designed and built under the MEGURI2040 Fully Autonomous Ship Program, launched by The Nippon Foundation in February 2020.

In practice, the notation means that the ship has been classified in accordance with Maritime Autonomous Surface Ship (MASS) guidelines. Features include technologies to minimise the risk of human error, and improved working conditions through the automation of certain key functions on board.

In Japan, this is important for several reasons. There are daily services to many populated but remote islands, for example, in which greater autonomous operation is helpful. Meanwhile, Japan’s seagoing labour force continues to come under pressure as personnel get older. Meanwhile, a career at sea does not appeal to many young people and many of those who choose to do so leave the industry after a few years.

The ClassNK notation covers functions relating to ship handling (Nav); conditional autonomy where system use is monitored by seafarers (2); and all voyage phases from berth to berth (All).
